When the round building welcomed its first patients in 1961, barely 170,000 people lived in Jerusalem. Today, the population is over 900,000 and rising. Hadassah’s Round Building belonged to a previous medical age, at the time, its design was considered cutting-edge. Its Vienna-educated architect, Joseph Neufeld, created its distinctive radial design and inaugurated a major change in hospital architecture.
Massive refurbishment is now needed to transform this outdated facility into a vibrant hub of future medicine. The existing 1960’s building has nine floors and the new Round Building will have an extra two floors added to make it 11 floors. The existing balconies on each room will be converted to allow more rooms as will the central core conversion. This will allow an extra 200 beds to be added plus 17 new operating rooms to Hadassah’s capacity. The structure will be considerably strengthened to make it earthquake proofed and rocket proofed. Hadassah UK is sponsoring the 3rd floor dedicated to Haematology- Oncology.
Through the rebuilding, renovation and expansion of our Round Tower Hadassah will:
• Add 200 new beds to significantly increase the number of patients they serves.
• Renovate 17 operating rooms with state-of-the-art equipment.
• Expand treatment offerings and reduce the risk of infection.
• Allow for upgrades to combine research and clinical services.
• Reconfigure and improve the interior space on each floor so that the doctors and nurses can respond to patients more quickly and effectively.
We have achieved enormous success in stem cell clinical trials, including with neurodegenerative diseases like Multiple Sclerosis & ALS (Motor Neurone Disease) plus cancer, heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes and many other diseases and disorders. With this renovation of the Round Tower, Hadassah’s doctors will be able to further ground-breaking research from “bench to bedside” that will both improve patient care and accelerate the discovery process.
